What We Do
Young Scientist Academy (YSA) empowers youth of all backgrounds to be community ambassadors of science and technology. We prioritize participation of girls and Black and Latinx youth in all our programs, which enables them with the confidence and scholarship to succeed in their chosen career and in life. Through its establishment of an interactive, think-tank research facility at the Harrelson Center in downtown Wilmington, YSA is uniquely positioned to provide youth in the Cape Fear region mentorship, and to equip all youth with leadership, skills and confidence to be future problem solvers, innovators, and global citizens, regardless of their socioeconomic standing. Last year, YSA mentored over 500 youth in real-world science experiences through its after-school Sidewalk Science, Code Niñas and Youth CAUSE Initiative summer enrichment programs. Furthermore, we are proud to have served the community throughout the COVID-19 pandemic by providing youth over 100 hours of free access to engaging virtual lessons. YSA has supported 80% Black and Latinx students and had 75% female participation in its core programs. Support YSA in fulfilling its mission by making a gift to our "GiVAN Tuesday" Campaign so that we can purchase a new 12-seater van and continue to make science equally accessible to all youth, and engage them to be ambassadors of science and technology. Thanks for supporting growth of our youth programs and helping us reach our goal of raising $25,000! Please click the donation button for more details and incentives!
