Tides, Inc. was established in 2017 by William Johnstone, MD, an Obstetrician Gynecologist in Wilmington, NC, who began to notice the increasing number of pregnant and newly postpartum patients with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and associated Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) births. Realizing that these women were a largely overlooked and underserved population, Dr. Johnstone created Tides, Inc. to engage this population in the recovery and treatment process.
Tides, Inc. is a comprehensive, intensive, outpatient treatment program for pregnant or newly postpartum women with SUD in the Cape Fear region. Using a comprehensive, evidence-based, therapeutic approach, Tides integrates in-house services with existing community partners to engage these women in the recovery process. Tides’ case managers guide women through the steps of recovery and coordinate transportation, parenting skills, prenatal/postpartum care as well as job readiness skills, relapse prevention plans and housing. Our mission is to keep the mother-child dyad intact by helping this underserved population take part in treatment and recovery to become healthy so they can have healthy babies.
- Tides is currently in its fifth year of operation and has helped over 100 women and babies in the Cape Fear region.
- 98% of our program participants, who have graduated our program, have custody of their baby and many have regained custody of previous children in foster care.
